Mission

Contemporary philosophy often appears as an abstract academic discipline that is too remote from the « real world » that the natural sciences investigate. Yet, many significant philosophical questions arise from the practice of science. The objective of the UQAM Research Chair in Philosophy of Science is to put science at the heart of the philosophical investigation.

The Chair aims at (1) carrying out a specific research program in philosophy of science —in particular on the epistemological questions that concern chemical evolution and the transition from non-living matter to living matter, on the notion of biodiversity, and on the nature of scientific explanation in biology— and (2) stimulating the development of philosophical investigation in close interaction with the sciences at UQAM.

The UQAM Research Chair in Philosophy of Science is located at the department of philosophy of UQAM and works together with the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST).
